About IEATA Africa

Throughout history, the arts have been used as a means of expression for the individual, social groups and communities.

South Africa and Africa as a whole, with its rich history rooted in culture and tradition, joins IEATA with a vision to advance Expressive Arts practices on the continent and foster opportunities where creativity can contribute to both individual and collective well-being.

Elzette and Joanne are honoured to be Regional Coordinators for IEATA Africa. Please reach out should you wish to collaborate with us.

Joanne Anagnostu MA, BEd

Joanne Anagnostu (MA Expressive Arts Therapy; BEd (Hons) Educational Psychology; BEd (Hons) Educational and Learning Support, BEd General Education)

Joanne Anagnostu, a qualified Foundation Phase and Educational and Learning Support teacher, has had many years of experience working with children and teenagers who present with learning difficulties, both in South Africa and the United Kingdom. During this time she became aware of the emotional challenges that the children/teenagers and their parents encountered.

Joanne later studied an Honours degree in Educational Psychology and became a Registered Counsellor. This enhanced and developed her skills in the socio-emotional aspects of child development, enabling her to counsel both children and teenagers. She further pursued a Master’s degree in Expressive Arts Therapy through the European Graduate School in Switzerland, expanding her expertise to counsel using the arts.

Joanne currently works in private practice as a Registered Counsellor and has been doing so for the past ten years. She provides individual counselling for children, teenagers, and adults facing a range of emotional and mental health challenges. In addition to traditional counselling methods, she uses the medium of the arts (be it music, drama, visual art, movement/dance, creative writing, poetry and/or play) to support self-expression, personal insight, and well-being.
